North Devon Journal - 22nd April 1909 - Match report of a Senior Game

Barnstaple Parish Church v Ilfracombe Devonia
These teams met in Pilton Park on Saturday in connection with the Senior League Competition. There was a large number of spectators present but unfortunately, after the first quarter of an hour's [;ay, rain fell in torrents for the remainder of the game, the players experiencing great difficulty in controlling the wet and heavy ball. The Church attacked on the commencement of the game, having hard luck with a couple of good efforts. 'Combe eventually took play to the other end, and several shots were tried, the Church custodian fisting a splendid high shot from Drew over the bar in fine style. Play was then transferred to midfield, from which the Church broke through by good forward play, a corner being forced. The kick was cleared but Tanner secured the leather and gave the Church the lead with a splendid dropping shot from fully thirty yards range. It was a splendid goal and Tanner was heartily applauded by the spectators. The Church did not enjoy the lead for long, however, for after good combined play between the 'Combe forwards, Drew equalised with a shot which gave Bale no chance whatever. Nothing further was added up to half time, when the score stood at one goal each.
The second half was not many minutes old when the Church secured the lead, Hill doing the needful with a good shot. 'Combe pressed for some considerable time after this, but could not add to their score, Bale being very safe in the Church goal. Just before the final whistle Somerfield scored a third goal for the Church, and when the final whistle sounded the score was:- Parish Church 3 goals; Ilfracombe Devonia 1 goal.
The teams were:-
Parish Church - Goal, W Bale; backs, H Tanner and S Norman; halves, L Frayne, F Webber and W Tossill; forwards, C Folland, R Passmore, J Somerfield, E Braddick and L Hill.
Ilfracombe Devonia - Goal, Cook; backs, Pile and Ley; halves, W Webber, C Huxtable and Draper; forwards, T Richards, Drew, K Wood, J Couch and Gumm.
Mr F Watts was the referee.
